Happy New Year! I hope you all enjoyed the holidays! I am so excited to share a little recap of how we spent our Christmas. I am usually very traditional when it comes to the holidays. Christmas Eve is spent with Keith’s family and Christmas Day dinner is spent with my family, hosted by my Mom. And with large families, we usually make several stops to visit relatives in between which can get a little chaotic. This year we wanted to have a low-key Christmas. Christmas Day is also my birthday, so Keith wanted to do something special. We decided to go on a little getaway, just the two of us.
We were not picky on the location. Our parameters were: a place north of us where there would be lots of snow and great scenery, a quiet area, a cozy fireplace, a kitchen so that we could cook meals on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day and an area that had some restaurants and shops nearby. We were searching the web on our separate devices and at the same time, we both stopped and said, “You need to look at this place!” We both came across the same place! It was a cute apartment located on the Connecticut River in Springfield, VT through Airbnb.
It was only a two and a half hour drive from our home. I was so excited when we arrived because the property and the apartment were so clean and as described. The apartment was equipped with all the kitchen essentials we needed to cook meals for the holiday. The owner had even stocked the place with eggs, muffins, coffee, tea, hot cocoa and snacks. We had a beautiful view overlooking the river. It was so peaceful and quiet. The property also had a walkway to the river and a little dock. The owners have kayaks that guests are able to take out on the river in the summer.
Keith wanted to exchange presents our first morning there. So we had a cozy morning and afternoon opening up presents and watching movies. That night, we took a ride to the Black Rock Steakhouse for dinner. I really liked the atmosphere, the service was great and the food was amazing (I recommend the caprese salad and the seasoned boneless chicken breast entrée).
Keith had booked us a sleigh ride for Christmas Eve at Taylor Farm in Londonderry. When we arrived at the farm, we bought some snacks and hot chocolate for the ride from their farm store. They had a huge assortment of cookies, cheeses, jams, syrup and a plethora of other goodies. During the sleigh ride, there was a fireside stop in the woods for roasted marshmallows and hot apple cider. Before we left, we went back to the store to taste their different cheeses and we bought some jam, crackers and maple syrup to take back with us.
The rest of our time there was spent cooking, playing board games, reading, watching movies and, overall, relaxing, which is exactly what we wanted. Like all good things, our stay had come to end and we drove back home the day after Christmas. It was nice having the holiday extended as we had several visits with our families to exchange presents and spend time with our nieces and nephew throughout the week when we returned.
We love spending time up north. Every year we travel to New Hampshire and this was our second trip to Vermont. I’d love to hear if you have any recommendations for summer or winter getaways in New England!
