As you know, we moved into our new home earlier this year. I’m excited to start sharing some home updates! Our previous home is an investment property so living there always felt temporary and was never fully “finished” when it came to decorating. I’m really happy to be in our new house and my goal is to finish every room as we intend on living here for quite a while. We recently had our first floor painted and are in the process of redecorating. Now that the painting is aside and most of the electrical has been updated, we can start the fun stuff!
Our living room is one of the rooms that I’ve been the most excited to decorate so I thought I’d share the e-design/mood board I created for this room first. We have a separate family room where we watch TV and spend a lot of our time. Our living room is open from the kitchen and is more of a sitting room with a fireplace, so I want this space to be more structured and formal than the family room. The overall design objective for this room is neutral, light and airy incorporating natural elements.
Paint Color
This room needed to be brightened up. Although we have windows, skylights and a slider bringing in a lot of natural light, the existing paint color made the room so dark. I decided to paint the walls white. Surprisingly, it didn’t take me long to decide on a paint color. I searched Pinterest and Instagram for some inspiration and ultimately selected Benjamin Moore White Dove (OC-17) in a matte finish. It is a creamy white, but not yellow, and it transitions nicely with another warm paint color we picked for our dining room and family room (more details to come!). We also used this color throughout the kitchen and main entryway. It’s made such a difference already!
Here is a peak of the before and after painting:
Seating
This isn’t a large space, so I need to find seating that will not clutter the space nor obstruct the path to our office (that is a separate room off to the side) and the kitchen. I like this ivory sectional sofa. I think it will fit in the space nicely and offer ample seating. I also found some similar options here, here and here.
I am looking for a light, natural wood coffee table and end table set. I love the look of this white-washed coffee table and matching end tables.
Window Treatments
Last year I purchased several pairs of these gray sheer curtains and I never used them in our other house. They come as a pair for only $13 – currently on sale for $11 per pair! I am using sheers instead of a heavier curtain to create an airy feel and to filter the natural light in. I also love these textured sheers. For hardware, I am going to keep it simple with basic black curtain rods and small, decorative finials.
Lighting
I have had these beautiful wooden lamps for several years. They come as a pair. The color and style go with everything!
There is currently an old ceiling fan installed. I am debating whether to replace it with a light fixture or replace it with a more relevant style like this driftwood fan.
Wall Décor
I am not planning on putting a lot of décor pieces on the walls. I have two small walls to work with. I’d like to add a piece of artwork on one and two small frames with personal photos on the other. I am in LOVE with this modern abstract artwork from Minted. It comes in various sizes and you can select from an assortment borders and frames.
Decorative Accents
This light gray and cream area rug was actually my starting point for this space. I think it ties the color scheme together and is a nice contrast to the white walls.
You can never have too many pillows! Throw pillows add layers and coziness to a space. I like to mix and match patterns and textures. I am loving this chevron, tribal, and embroidered floral combination.
How cute is this porcelain covered lantern? It will make the perfect centerpiece for the coffee table.
I can’t forget about the fireplace mantel. I’d like to replace the existing dull mantel shelf with a white, decorative shelf to display frames, candle sticks and a decorative mirror.
Lastly, I plan on adding a real fiddle leaf fig tree in a woven basket planter. Although, I did find some very nice artificial options that I’ve linked below.
I can’t wait to complete this project and reveal the finished space! Thanks for stopping by and I look forward to sharing more of our decorating plans!
